Hair stylist, Chris McMillan, dishes about Jennifer Aniston's hair secrets

Chris McMillan, longtime friend and hair stylist to Jennifer Aniston, discusses his professional secrets in working on Jennifer's gorgeous hair. In an exclusive interview on Elle.com, McMillan reveals where his inspiration for "The Rachel" came from, what hair products he uses on Aniston and his tricks for styling her hair.

McMillan, who owns a salon in Beverly Hills, has been working on Jennifer Aniston's hair ever since he created "The Rachel" hairstyle for her which became popular while she was on Friends. McMillan says the Rachel hairstyle was inspired by a model named Beri Smither who was wearing a shag haircut at the time.

McMillan explains that the Rachel evolved after McMillan urged Aniston to grow her bangs out. "The next thing you know," McMillan says, "her bangs were down to her chin, and the rest of her hair was at her shoulders in these long, loose layers that sort of flipped out—and that’s what we called the Rachel."

Aniston currently uses McMillan's own brand of shampoo and conditioner which contains natural ingredients like avocado, coconut and walnut oils. For deep conditioning and styling, McMillan uses Shu Uemura products on Aniston's naturally wavy, medium-textured hair.

When styling Aniston's hair, McMillan says he never uses curling irons or flatirons. For the Elle September magazine cover shoot, McMillan did what he calls a “bad blow-dry.” He uses a variety of different-sized round brushes "twisting the hair around them—so that I leave the hair halfway dry, halfway wet. This way, I pull the curl out but allow the hair to go into its natural form."

McMillan describes Jennifer Aniston's hair as pretty and sexy: “Pretty” to me is adding texture, and “sexy” is undone-looking hair," McMillan explains. "If you look at her hair, it looks like it grew out of her head like that—it doesn’t look like a curling iron touched it."

See for yourself how Aniston's hair has changed texture and length over the years, while keeping that sleek and sexy look. You can vote on which of Jen's different hairstyles you like best at Elle's Timeline of Jennifer Aniston Hairstyles.
